Livingston County Procures State Funding for New Emergency Communications Tower
GENESEO, N.Y., Oct. 5, 2022 — The New York State 2021 and 2022 Statewide Interoperable Communications Grant (SICG) Program has recently awarded Livingston County with $1,207,837 for the construction of a new emergency communications radio tower.
The proposed 120-foot tower will complement eight other emergency communication towers within the County to provide greater communications coverage for local police, firefighters, EMS, probation officers, County highway personnel, and others. The radio tower will be located just outside the County’s Emergency Operations Center in Mount Morris and provide enhanced interoperability among County agencies, said Amanda Schultz, Director of Communications for the Livingston County Sheriff’s Office.
“The tower’s biggest benefit is that we are providing better radio coverage for our first responders in the field,” she explained. “This new tower will help with radio coverage issues on the State Route 63 corridor by the salt mine and south in to Dansville, along with the State Route 408 issues around Mt. Morris and the Interstate 390 corridor.”
Schultz said beginning the project has been dependent on funding awards from the state. The County was previously awarded $612,806 through the same SICG program in 2020. With the state funding, project officials have been able to procure a construction company, a shelter company for the new radio equipment, a tower and, now with the new award, the emergency communications radio equipment components necessary for the project.
Schultz expects construction on the tower to begin in the last quarter of 2022 with a completion date of early 2023, winter weather conditions permitting.
