4-H Youth Spread Love on Valentine’s Day Weekend
For their February club activity, the members of the Ontario County 4-H Teen Group wanted to spread some love to those who may be feeling lonely this Valentine season. Their solution was a Valentine’s Day card drive. Teen group members Shelby Miller, Olivia Maslyn, Grace Maslyn, Wyatt Wadams, Isaiah Czadzeck, Hannah Czadzeck, and Simon Czadzeck came up with this idea and developed materials to promote the drive to others in their 4-H community. They invited 4-H families across Ontario County to make homemade Valentine’s Day cards that would be distributed to residents of local nursing homes. Youth ages 5-19 from various 4-H clubs participated by creating cards. In total, the teens collected 305 handmade cards, and were able to divide those cards between Elm Manor, Thompson Continuing Care, Horizons, and Quail Summit senior facilities. Ontario County 4-H Educator, Sarah Wilhelm shares: “It is wonderful to see youth of all ages reach out to spread love and kindness in our community in a time when we so desperately need it.” Although youth were not able to distribute the cards in-person, they are hopeful that these cards will bring warmth and cheer to the recipients.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Ontario County 4-H is offering several in-person social distanced and virtual learning opportunities. Our 2020-2021 4-H year began on October 1st.
