Shop smaller revisited
McAllister’s Jewelry and Crafts at 27 Chapel St in Mt. Morris, NY opened in May 2017. Edward McAllister, the store’s owner, moved from Newburgh, NY in the Hudson Valley to Lakeville and then Mt. Morris. McAllister has Abenaki Native American heritage and th
is is reflected in his jewelry and crafts, including dream catchers and wood burn plaques.
McAllister’s also carries seasonal wreaths, floral pieces and quilts made by area artisans. McAllister believes that shopping small and local allows people to make a livelihood where they live. Small, local shops with local goods also promote tourism in the region by providing points of interest.

Two Olde Crows is the inspiration of Debra Burrows and Rick Diegert. The couple opened their store, located at 63 Main Street, Mount Morris, New York, February 2017 with the goal of providing excellent customer service and, per their online site, to help people “find what they want without taking every dime that they have.”
The store adds to the alure of Mt. Morris as an antique shopping destination, with its many enticing places to explore.
Debra and Rick were out when I stopped to inquire about smaller shopping advantages, but I spoke with Sheila who was covering the store. Sheila believes, as do many smaller vendors, that shopping small and local is about keeping the money in our own backyards. It’s also about taking the time to share with friends and family because too often these days we “lose ourselves in technology. I agree, and, oh, BTW: Sheila is the maker of the Santas.
