Genesee Valley 100 is More Than Just Art
It’s about people and the places we love and protect. Each artist who contributed has a different story to tell – Here are two of them.
Linda Purdy: I paint for the joy of it, mainly people and landscapes. I use the park and other areas around the Genesee Valley as well as my travels for my landscapes and my grandchildren and their activities for many of my “people paintings.

Jane Grace Taylor: I am originally from the Mohawk Valley where I created and directed several large community murals including the Patriot Wall (60 feet high), Starks Landing along the old Erie Canal bicycle route (100 feet long) and the fife and drum Corps in Camden, featured in Sculpture Space’s booklet “ART ONEIDA”
I came to this region a few years ago and was struck by its beauty. This was a natural project for me to be drawn to as I have an intense love of nature . The oil painting I chose to do was created from a sunny day explore along a local waterway where I captured the kayakers gliding peacefully on their way.
I am a retired NYS certified art teacher with a masters degree in fine arts from Syracuse University .part of the proceeds go to the conservancy -I have also donated my services to the Seneca park zoo restoring their mural and donating to their art auction.
The Genesee Valley 100: A Community Painting Project (which includes panels from Taylor and Purdy) is viewable online and in person, this project had only two simple directives for artists: use the provided 12×12 canvas and paint something inspired by the Genesee Valley.
Organized by Genesee Valley Conservancy, a local non-profit celebrating thirty years of protecting habitat, open space, and farmland within the Genesee Valley, this project aims to capture the beauty and undefinable essence that the organization has been working to protect.
The goal is to see what inspires people about the Genesee Valley and, in turn, present those images to the public to inspire others to recognize what a beautiful and special place we live.
The collection of works is on display at Silver Lake Brewing Project in Perry. While each individual piece warrants up close inspection, hung together at the brewery the collection is an impressive mosaic that is a work of art itself.
The Genesee Valley 100 exhibit of photography is open at Silver Lake Brewing Project in Perry during their regular business hours through the end of the year. The project can also be viewed online on the Conservancy’s website. www.geneseevalleyconservancy.org
