Visual Studies Workshop Launches Season 3 of Podcast
ROCHESTER, NY (June 20, 2024) Visual Studies Workshop (VSW), the Rochester-based nonprofit arts organization dedicated to experimental and expansive approaches to photography and media arts, has dropped the first episode of their Project Space Podcast, Season Three. Hosted by visual artist and VSW Assistant Curator Hernease Davis, the podcast features engaging conversations with artists who have participated in VSW’s Project Space Residency.
The podcast focuses on photographers, filmmakers, and media artists, their artistic practice, and how residencies contribute to their work. Season Three of the podcast is currently in production and will feature Ligia Bouton (MA), Raymond Thompson, Jr. (TX), Joshua Tonies (CA), Priya Kambli (MO), Beina Xu (Berlin, Germany), Claudia Claremi (Madrid, Spain) and Samantha Box (NY).
“The podcast is a way to connect our audience with exciting artists who are expanding photography and media arts,” shares Davis. “There are so many amazing people who participate in the Project Space Residency, and this podcast gives listeners a ‘behind the studio door’ look into what drives their creations, and the variety of ways artists use residencies.”
The Project Space Podcast was released in Fall 2022 and has featured conversations with artists such as Aspen Mays & Dan Boardman, whose collaborative book project uses the AI technology DALL-E 2 to make photographs of their descriptions of the Biosphere 2 project; Anna Kipervaser whose experimental films engage a range of topics including human and animal bodies, ethnicity, religion, colonialism, and the environment; Ana Paula Estrada, an Australia-based artist, whose residency produced an award-winning periodical series that creates connections between aged-care residents and the surrounding communities; and others.
The Project Space Podcast is produced and hosted by VSW Assistant Curator Hernease Davis. Tara Nelson, Curator and Director of Public Programs and Tate Shaw, VSW Press Editor have served as guest hosts. Additional Season One & Two guests include Eduardo Rivera, Lili Chin, and Savannah Wood. Available via Apple Podcasts, VSW.org, and beyond.
About Visual Studies Workshop: Visual Studies Workshop nurtures experimental and expansive approaches to photography and media arts, and builds community among artists and the public through exhibitions, publications and residencies. VSW was founded in 1969 in Rochester, NY by artist and curator Nathan Lyons (1930–2016), and became one of the earliest independent, not-for-profit, artist-run spaces in the country. More than 50 years later, the organization’s mission is reflected in its core programs: VSW Salon, Project Space Artist Residencies, and VSW Press. In support of VSW programs, the organization holds photography and moving image research collections and an art library for artists, critics and the general public to explore, research and reuse. vsw.org
