Statement from Governor Kathy Hochul on Supreme Court Decision to Review Case on Legality of Ban on Bump Stocks
“Nine days after the latest mass shooting to terrify America, the United States Supreme Court has decided to consider overturning a ban on bump stocks, the attachments that enable semiautomatic rifles to fire in sustained, rapid bursts. Bump stocks effectively convert semiautomatic guns into automatic weapons and were banned by the Justice Department following a mass shooting in 2017 in Las Vegas in which bump stocks were used by a gunman to kill 58 people and to wound hundreds of others. This comes one year after the Supreme Court recklessly overturned a century-old law that established common-sense gun safety regulations in New York. We will be watching closely as the Supreme Court reviews this case, but our commitment remains the same: we will not stop fighting to take bold action to protect New Yorkers and end the gun violence epidemic.”
