Electric vehicle drivers, supporters, and intrigued local residents are expected to attend the Livingston County Electric Car Show today to highlight the climate, clean air, and cost savings benefits provided by electric cars as part of the 12th annual National Drive Electric Week.
The twelfth annual National Drive Electric Week, a coast-to-coast celebration of electric vehicles (EVs), will be held September 24–October 1.
Vehicles at the event include several electric vehicles, including the new Ford F-150 Lightning, and Volkswagen ID.4, and plug-in hybrid vehicles. Owners are available to answer key questions, and some will be offering ride-and-drives to experience the feel of driving electric. The gathering will be held at the site of newly installed electric vehicle charging stations on Main Street, which allows residents and local visitors to charge their vehicles while patronizing local businesses or exploring the Genesee Valley Greenway. There will be additional activities for people of all ages, prize drawings, information on how to reduce your energy usage, and how to get involved in eco-friendly activities. A Consumer Reports study shows that total ownership cost savings can more that make up for an electric vehicle’s typically higher purchase price. Many electric vehicles may be eligible for one or both of the New York State rebate and federal tax credits, including used EVs – driving electric is now even more affordable. “At a time like this, when gasoline prices have skyrocketed, a switch to electric vehicles frees Americans from a reliance on volatile gas prices while reducing air pollution. Plus, these cars are incredibly fun, efficient, and convenient to drive,” said Katie Rigg, a volunteer with the Climate Solutions Accelerator. “The Livingston County Drive Electric Week event shows our community how real people are enjoying these cars without the need for oil.”
There are now more than 1.5 million EVs on the road in the United States, and a recent survey by Consumer Reports and the Union of Concerned Scientists showed that more than 60% of prospective car buyers in the U.S. are interested in electric vehicles. There are now more than 40 models available in the U.S., with many of the newer models having a range of 200-300 miles or more.
