Why spin?
by Karen Scott Haggas –
By day, I am a property manager for an office building in Rochester. And at most other times, I love seeing fiber flow through my fingers and onto the spinning wheel knowing that this fiber will become yarn and finally an article I have created with my hands.
Spinning is therapy – The whole process is soothing, bringing me calmness and a desire to learn and do more. I am a member of the Genesee Valley Handspinners Guild where likeminded enthusiasts gather to share ideas and the love of creating. Fiber folk are good folk, and spinning in company is great for ideas and friendship.
I am also a member of the committee of the Guild that sponsors the Finger Lakes Fiber Festival, the very best of the local world of spinning and fiber. It is a place to recharge the creative battery, to see the new colors and fibers as well as tools and patterns.
Two spinning wheels live at my house. My Louet S90 is my traveling workhorse going with me to Guild meetings and spin-ins. And my Golding Glory, my newest acquisition, is a joy to spin on during the quiet times at home.
