George M. Ewing Canandaigua Forum Presents
CANANDAIGUA, NEW YORK – October 12, 2022 –
Juliette Kayyem, a national leader in US homeland security efforts, will speak at Fort Hill Performing Arts Center on October 30, 2022 at 4PM. In How to Live in a World of Catastrophes: A Guide to Dealing with Disasters, Ms. Kayyem will explore what it means to prepare ourselves and our communities for our inevitable encounters with disasters – both natural and manmade. Canandaigua native and Emmy Award-winning writer and political commentator Michael Winship will moderate the discussion and the audience question and answer period at the end of the discussion.
We cannot stop natural disasters, but we can arm ourselves with knowledge: so many lives wouldn’t have to be lost if there was enough disaster preparedness. – Petra Nemcova
Wildfires are raging, flood levels are rising, pandemics are surging, and violence in our streets is becoming commonplace. Juliette Kayyem, a national leader in homeland security and crisis management, will help us rethink our approaches to disaster preparedness and response.
There is an irony here; as our systems of response become more and more sophisticated for recurring disasters, and people take heed of familiar threats, the disaster can still be challenging and lethal. How people die matters. -Juliette Kayyem
The Robert and Renee Belfer Senior Lecturer and faculty chair of the Homeland Security and Security and Global Health Projects at Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government, Juliette Kayyem also serves as a national security analyst for CNN where she has been described as CNN’s “go to” for disasters. She is a frequent contributor to The Atlantic and has a weekly security segment on NPR’s Boston station WGBH. Prior to Harvard, Ms. Kayyem served as an Assistant Secretary for Homeland Security, Massachusetts state Homeland Security Advisor and as a member of the National Commission on Terrorism, as a legal advisor to US Attorney General Janet Reno.
An author of six previous books including the best seller Security Mom, Kayyem recently published The Devil Never Sleeps: Learning to Live in an Age of Disasters which was described in a New Yorker profile as an “engagingly urgent blueprint for rethinking our approach to disaster preparedness and response.” In Canandaigua, Ms. Kayyem will share that blueprint as well as her experiences at the intersection of disasters, homeland security and motherhood.
